My favourite news site, Slashdot, has recently mortgaged a little bit more of its soul and announced a subscription service. This has caused a lot of controversy (a free software site that costs money? What?) but I was most impressed with this rant against advertising, posted anonymously. It's a fantastic piece of writing, and I have to say I agree sometimes :-)

So, some friends and I were having a discussion, and it seems to us that there is a very strong correlation between breast-feeding and homosexuality: mainly, the breast-feeders have turned out mainly straight, and the non-breast-feeders seem to be mainly gay. So I'm conducting an unofficial survey: mail me and tell me your age, your sexual orientation, and whether or not you were breast-fed. Results to be published when I have enough :-)

Googling on the topic didn't turn up anything very useful, but it did turn up the scary-amusing Ban Breast Feeding website. I really hope they're not serious.

I've done rather a lot of blogging in recent days, but what the heck, it's not like anybody reads this stuff anyway. This weekend I finally completed the latest version of the play I've written, Silly Things. I'm desperate for feedback, so here for your reading pleasure is the most recent manucscript in plain text and a slightly older version (like, from the day before) in easier-on-the-eyes-but-fundamentally-evil MS Word 2000 format.

Maybe it's just me, but did you ever wonder where it is science writers for magazines and newspapers find out about all those studies and all the research projects they report on? Apparently, it's at EurekAlert, "the premier science news website since 1996". An endless stream of interesting new articles and research. Yay! Somewhere new to read.

Also, some random browsing started at memepool, brilliant as always, and led to the B3TA Zoo, featuring such wonders as Apanda Bin Laden, Chris Tarantula, the Tarantullama, and finally Chimpanzeena herself. Thence to B3TA itself, which is amazing, followed by Animutation, including the hilarious if completely unpronounceable Hyakugojyuuichi, which is so worth the time. An interview with animutation's 15-year-old creater then led me to FARK, which is yet another memepool-like site, with its major categories of bulletin being "amusing", "asinine", "obvious", "spiffy", "strange", and "boobies". Cool.

Then I stopped, because I clearly should have stopped long before.

Evil corporations can be funny! Watch as the Coca Cola Company spews propaganda on every possible topic pertaining to its product, including articles like "sugar does not cause hyperactivity", "caffeine is just a flavouring", and "caffeine is not bad for you in any way". Well done, the CIA would be proud.

Completely unrelated, but pertinent to a conversation I coincidentally had with Marc the other day, humans living in Europe may or may not be the descendants of homo spaiens that bred with Neandertals.

I've noticed that recently BBC News Online seems to always have the same three types of article as its top three stories: the latest horrific body count from the Israelis versus the Palestinians, whichever happens to have struck most recently, the latest developments in Bush's little war, and an article on how corrupt the UK government is, or failing that, any old government. So it was a welcome surprise today to see an article revealing that Pop Idol winner Will Young says he's gay. I think that's great, because:

1. I told you so, and
2. He's only been a pop star for about two weeks, during which his only other action has been to kill his career before it even gets started.

And in other IMHO history-making news, the UN security council formally backed the creation of a Palestinian state, by a vote of 14 to 1. Hey, ho, and fuck you Mr. Sharon! I'm sick and tired of the Israeli-Palestinian conflict; pointless, endless death makes me despair for the human race.

Another week without sleep, another deadline met. Having caught 14 hours of sleep to make up for not having any for the last three days, I am feeling a trifle more human now. Or as human as I ever get.
Today's surreal-humour dose is provided by Divorce-Online.co.uk. Okay, so fair enough, people get divorced a lot nowadays, and it's expensive and inconvenient, so an online shop is a good idea. But what really completes the picture is the pinnacle of stupid marketing tactics: their self-branded online dating service. So you can happily spend the rest of your life bouncing from one site to the next, picking 'em up and dropping 'em off. I mean, where better to find a date than at a site called "Divorce Online"?

Easter vacation has begun! Yay! It's my first day off with no deadlines around the corner that I've had in a while, so it's time to offload the backlog of stupid sites I've been bookmarking. I'm not sure *why*, exactly, since nobody actually reads this site on a regular basis, but it's good to have new stuff online.

Is your copy of Morpheus broken? That's because KaZaA locked them out of their network. However, KaZaA still works fine. If it's all not very legal anyway, do you care if they use unfair tactics to get more customers?

I can't say I tried hard, but as a competitor to KaZaA, AudioGalaxy totally sucks. And you can't use it to download episodes of Fraggle Rock and relive your youth. For instance.

If you don't like closed networks (such as the above) then the new Morpheus is a Gnutella client, but so is LimeWire, and the latter is much better. BearShare is also a contender, but it killed my machine's resources, as did LimeWire. KaZaA isn't shy about using memory, but it's a bit more polite about things.

Funky case mods and bits of randomly altered computer hardware are to be found at BitTech. Stuff to made you go "Hey, these people have way too much time on their hands," of course, but also "Cool".

Teach your computer to execute Java class files simply by double-clicking. Useful, if you're me.
