I briefly debated whether or not to name-and-shame my former school on this page. Not, you understand, because I had any qualms about laying into the hellhole that was my school, but because it would provide a possible link to me in the real world that I don't control: all the other links to me provided by the site and the Internet in general are under my own control -- basically, they're all e-mail addresses. But nobody currently at my old school now would know who the hell Seldo was, even if you were such a stalker as to try and get in touch with the school to find out who I am. And if you somehow were clever enough to find it out from there, well, I enjoy talking to clever people :-)
I am a former student of St. Mary's College, in Port of Spain, Trinidad and Tobago. And I don't hesitate to say that I hated that school, and all the time I spent there. There are a bunch of reasons why.
The first and most obvious that occurs to me is the facilities available. This is not really the school's fault -- the church and the goverment jointly (under)fund the school, so if better facilities are required it's up to them to provide more money. But the facilities are terrible. The school building is mainly an adapted colonial building, originally built as a boarding school and converted first for the introduction of electricity (the main building is 125 years old) and then later to cram extra students into the space. So the building is old and in some places visibly crumbling, and the conversion of former dormitories into classrooms leads to some classes being quite nice, light, breezy rooms while others are hot, cramped and dark. Air conditioning is non-existent in all but a few offices (belonging to faculty, of course), even in the height of the rainy season, when the country is hottest. Also, newer buildings have been grafted onto older buildings with not a great deal of thought or redesign, so there are numerous cramped pinchpoints where overcrowding always occurs during classroom switches.
The pain doesn't end there, though. The toilets are gruesome; men's toilets are typically not nice places to visit (for reasons I've never understood), and the absence of any toiletries, maintenance or any but the most cursory cleaning does not improve this situation. Food is available from cafeterias, but these are four tiny holes in the wall with no seating and seldom any organization in terms of how to be served. Given a school population now over 1200 students -- thats 300 students per cafeteria, with lunchtime being the same forty-five minute period all of them -- this turns lunchtime into a mob fight to obtain food. Desks and chairs are rudimentary and frequently in short supply even so. Laboratory equipment is on the whole ancient and insufficient for the needs of the student body; this is especially the case for computer science, where a total of 25-odd computers exist to teach computer literacy to the entire school, and due to faculty incompetence these are locked away from student use most of the time.
Most people would consider a school in such a terrible physical state to be a hellhole, all by itself. And this is probably true. But at St. Mary's College, this is merely the base point at which things begin to get really annoying.
St. Mary's College is also called CIC: this stands for College of the Immaculate Conception, a reference to the alleged "virgin birth" of Jesus Christ to Mary Christ (well, what was her last name then? If Jesus' last name is Christ, and God as far as I know doesn't have a last name, he has to have got it from his parents, who therefore must be Joseph and Mary Christ).
The name of the college should indicate that CIC has a clear religious bias: it is partly funded by the Catholic church, and as such is granted permission by the government to indoctrinate its pupils with whatever nonsensical dogma is favoured by the people who foot the bill -- if the Church of Scientology finds out about this policy, we should probably be even more scared. At CIC, Catholic education comes in the form of dedicated religious classes, daily prayers throughout the school day, and occasional "holy days" on which normal classes are suspended for the purposes of religious observances. I'm an athiest -- and I'll admit, a fairly militant one -- but I'm not going to go out and try to convince people that their religion is wrong about nearly everything, even if that's clearly the case. I wish the Trinidadian goverment would get the hang of the separation of church and state to the point where they could return the favour.
Schooling at CIC for a non-Catholic (far less an athiest) is a constant barrage of subtly demeaning references. You must keep silent while the Catholics say their prayers, you must attend school but do nothing on the holy days, wasting precious school time on religious observances which do not apply to you, and you are in general treated like a second-class citizen. This point is driven home during the third (and under certain circumstances, second) year at CIC, during which non-Catholic students are assigned to a subject held during the same period as religious education classes, euphemistically termed "Horticulture". Horticulture class is in fact a thinly-disguised excuse to use the student body -- specifically, the non-Catholic student body -- as unpaid manual labour to maintain the grounds of the college. This sounds farcical, but I guarantee that I'm not making this up. I'm not sure what academic skills are being honed by mowing the college lawn or trimming the hedges, but at the very least I'm sure it's not a skill lacked in particular by students who are not Catholic.
It is, in retrospect, unbearably unfair. One could argue -- in the particularly unfair case of horticulture -- that using students as a labour force is saving the college money which are benefiting all the students. But this can only really apply if all the students were being asked to perform these tasks. Getting non-Catholic students to do it is a disgrace to the school, the church, and the government which allows such a system to exist.
These sterling qualities are still not the end of the story, however. A badly-maintained and bigoted school might perhaps be forgiven if it were a friendly, welcoming school that heartily fosters education. Unfortunately, this isn't the case.
The prevailing mental attitude throughout the school -- with a few rare, but significant exceptions -- is one of constant and open hostility on all sides.
The students hate: the staff, the administration, and most of the other students. The staff hate: the students, most of each other, and especially the the administration. The administration hates: the students, the staff, and the maintenance personnel. The maintenance personnel in turn regard everyone with equal contempt.
Staff and students alike form small cliques which survive in an insular fashion, and if you are unlucky enough not to fall into any clique -- or if enough of the other cliques band together against your clique -- life can be very miserable. Constant infighting between staff for influence destroys productivity, and incessant bureaucracy drives it still further down. Lack of co-operation between staff and students further degrades the quality of education, and the final nail in the coffin is frequently open hostility between students.
On top of this, there are all the problems one typically gets with an all-male student body: the desire to appear strongly masculine and maintain credibility means truancy is encouraged and diligence and curiosity retarded. Destructive and negative attitudes towards almost any show of enthusiasm means creativity is almost non-existent, both in recreation and academia.
Faced with all these problems, one still might be able to salvage the reputation of a school if one were able to assert that, for a sufficiently determined student, a high-quality education was there to be had. Unfortunately, this is just not the case. Teachers are underpaid and overworked, and as such the only individuals who become teachers are those to whom the money is unimportant and whom love the work -- dedicated academics, who are valuable as diamonds and about as rare in the educational system -- or those to whom no other career choices are available: in short, losers.
I say without hesitation that losers make up 95% of the teaching staff at CIC. These people are losers for a variety of reasons, but they all have in common the fact that the only reason they are teachers is that they cannot do.
This is clearly a picture of a school diseased and in desperate need of attention; yet sadly CIC is still one of the finer schools in the nation. I dread to think what the rest must be like.
Sadly, there are no real quick-fixes to the bulk of these problems short of complete overhaul of the school and, preferably, the entire educational system. But a quick wish-list is possible, the measures varying in extremity:
And that is why I hated my school. Along the course of writing it, the above changed from merely a description to an open letter to the people of Trinidad, hoping to bring about some positive change. But I like it anyway, and maybe it will at least make those responsible for the six most miserable years of my life feel a little bit guilty.

This is exactly the attitude that made it difficult for me as a student, and I think it is merely a microcosm of the nationalistic, and contradictory cliquish Trini attitude that exists throughout the island. You can see it in the politics of the country and in the way the news is reported in a biased fashion in the country's leading newspapers. I hope that with the opportunities that our young people have abroad that many will learn a more global attitude and bring that home with them to improve all the schools and the country as a whole.

@meenie: anything I am that is good or useful is despite that school, not because of it. That school nearly destroyed me, as it has destroyed so many others, and for that it deserves all the disgrace in the world.

favor of Dawkins' God Delusion and teach Evolutionary Biology insteady of Civics, R.I. and (HORTICULTURE?) maybe they would produce a more egalitarian and efficient school. Anyway I's still like to point out that we are a third World country still in a state of evolution and the best schools in it would be no different
P.s. I hate tthat stupid College Song
Was that some kinda attempt at building some kinda mental Superiority over other people.I cant remember anything about love and brotherhood being sang.
saints_boy_ and _ you_ full_of_hate_ waste _of_life_writer
I could not even finish the second paragraph for me to defend my points against your hate directed opinions then I would be wasting a portion of life on something(not someone...you have have been degraded) that is not gonna change.
By statistics,
In cic there are variations in skills and attitudes, people hate it sometimes then like it other, got suspended one year, got a scholarship. This is what makes the prestigious overall trend.
But you sir, are an outlier .
a random occurance/mutation/test of god that was accepted to cic so that you may write your useless rant that does not affect anything in trinidad as killings have not changed over the 5 years.
Please excuse me as I recollect myself and allocate my time to finishing my thesis

We can`t help the fact that you were a pessimistic lame introvert.who lacked self confidence.
I went to CIC and I must say it will forever be one of the most memorable times in my life as would many other past students. of course every secondary institution has its problems and cic was no different but it is HIGH SCHOOL DEAL WITH IT!!!
Like everyone else you have to make the best of it ..WELCOME TO LIFE!!!!!!!!!

In due course I will publish a counter arguement; not that I have any personal greviences with the writer but moreso against the written so that I can defend not only my reputation but the reputation of all those who have attended and who are currently attending the college.
I don't know what your agenda was when writing this, whether it was simply to gain the attention of other people who you would hope to become your,"gay" friends(I did read that you dislike heterosexuals) or maybe you simply needed to twist the truth so that you could explain away whatever grades you obtained while you were in the school. Whatever the case is you have attacked many prestigious individuals. Your writing is now the cause of concern for many that you have been tarnishing the name of CIC for the last five years. There are many of us who will not stand for it and out ultimate aim is to prevent such a hateful lie from further damaging. I do wish that I came across it much earlier so that I could have put a stop to the slander.
Rather than threatening, I simply ask that you remove this blog from your website and any other components of your website that attacks the core of Christianity and of CIC. Please act swiftly and an apology should be imminent.
Its a shame that ideals such as these should not only exist but seek to poison the minds of the ignorant on a public forum like this.

they did horticulture yes as a money saving activity but they chose non-catholics because you had no classes while the rest did. i preferred horticulture and i used to pretend i was non-catholic rather than boring ass mr. fitzpatrick, until rajah found out.
and if the teachers are so bad why does the school perform so well? 20-something schols last year.
as i said i didnt like the school but im glad i was educated there instead of fatima who gets no schols, QRC even less and st.anthony's, the white boy junior sec for footballers

All you damn people who have negative comments about the school wish you went there ... stop blaming CIC just because your dumbasses couldn't get in the school......
GO SAINTS....
wayysss
I'm not a catholic, I am a christian however, and I do believe in God. But I was never once forced to say any of their prays, go to any of the RI classes or attend any mass. Infact I went to a couple of the Religion classes on my own accord, just out of curiosity. I was never treated in a biased way by any of the faculty.
Coming into the school in form 1 , like most people I had little or no friends, which by the end of that first week changed, leaving the school in Upper 6, you can ask random people, from any race if they knew me and they would laugh and reply yes. I had no problem with making friends, and I did not see race as a barrier. White ppl had their friends, black ppl had thier friends, the indians had their friends. And as far as I see it, yes they mostly stuck together (social instinct) but we all mixed it up, whether it was through football, cricket, by house, and by class.
I think it's just what you made of the experience, you choosed to critic everything and stick to yourself, which made it worse. And I choosed, to look past the petty flaws (trust you would neve find a perfect school, in Trinidad or anywhere in the world) and make the best of the chance I had. A staff that actually came to school, unlike alot of Junior and Senior Secondary schools. Just the prestige of being in that school, people label you as smart automatically. I was pushed to excel, even from my peers.
I think you should look inside, and I'm sorry you had that experience and it couldn't be different for you. I can sit now and paint the opposite picture you just portrayed of my school, and tell everyone Why I loved my school so much. At least you can say that the school has instilled something in you, going to a Junior sec' I don't think you could of been articulate or even inspired enough to write a piece such as this, props to your school then, it made you who you are!
Big up to everybody from 1-10, 2-7, 3-D,4-13, 5-21. . Business-1!!!!
Dominic
What hostility?
I went for all 7 years and I cant pick out any incident in that time that was any more or less than what one would expect from teenage boys in school ANYWHERE. Even de men dat was comin from Laventille like me wasn causin no trouble. You prolly jus had it bad, but dont cast aspersions on the entire school legacy cuz of dat.
And the religion thing...dey never made us say any prayers if it wasnt our religion, but we would keep quiet in respect of ppl faith. It was no scene.
And fuck what anyone says, horticulture was rel kicks...at least they didnt force non-catholics to go to religion class....THEN you would have something to complain about....but no. They made up some class so your religious sensitivities wouldnt get offended and you vex. cyah please ppl nah!
big up to class of '03! (Science I an II!)
Marc
Catholic students like non catholics had to sweep floors mop and do horticulture in detention. and in form three (ribeiro) strong clown used to make everyman jack who come early sweep his class room.
I agree facilities wise the school could use a million or so for remodelling the science and computer labs and general desk and classroom maintenance.. But bossman. this is an issue for all Government and Governmet assisted schools in the country.
We had one bathroom that was unbelievably nasty.. and another that was very good for a boys school.
I just want everybody know.. this man is the bullah they catch Joking in the nasty bathroom
Peace
You obviously had NOOOOOOOO friends. And you must be reaaaaall Fat I mean as big as a house because even the narrowest corridors didnt cause that much congestion during class room swithces. and at any given time it is hard to imagine more than 50-100 students moving thorugh the narrowest corridors to get to class ( I am speaking especially of the stairs to the Fr. Graf wing).
How much FORKING cafeteria you want. Most people bring their food ...one.. two... Ms Choo-quan wasnt serving nobody who didnt line up.. Only ms Pierre cafeteria was K-os.. but like I said... everybody probably push you outta the wya cuz you were a friendless imps.... again not the school's fault.
fuck dis bullah
DE FACTS
In a third world country, you are going to a school without school fees and you expect better facilities than they had? What are you, stupid?
In 7 years I never had a single problem getting food at one of the cafeterias. I liked almost all of the teachers and they liked me. I got to use the computers almost anytime I wanted to and it was one of the most memorable experiences of my life. Obviously the flaw in the whole equation is you and your incompatible attitude. Why try to get into a catholic school with such negative beliefs, what did you expect, a school that is run by priests to not say prayers. Ive wasted enough time reading this and replying, I done. Idiot.
N
If you had a problem attending a Catholic School by all means you should have transferred to another school! I make such a statement without reserve or apology! I'm tired of non-catholics especially coming from as far as Central, Sangre Grande and beyond to receive quality education and the concomitant prestige and then leaving never once contributing to the development of the college! Even more insulting is when those ungrateful people have the audacity to attack the college!
If you have a problem rest assured there are other schools like Hillview and Naparima etc. They don’t come close to matching the quality and prestige of Saints, but then again that’s why you attended, did you not?!
Your attending CIC was a complete and utter waste of time, energy, effort and space. Another student would have benefited (as you did make no mistake, for just the very mention of the college on your CV gives you a perceived advantage locally, regionally and globally!) from your absence. It is people like you that make me wish to expunge the record of you ever setting foot on Frederick Street, far less the college grounds!
Granted, we are not perfect, and within recent times we have seen a decline in standards, such is inevitable given the nature of change surrounding this country. Despite being burdened with the most injudicious Government and the worst Education Minister (especially her attempts to undermine the Concordant) in the history of our nation, we continue to set the pace, tone and standard for the education sector in Trinbago. It is a result of passion, honor, loyalty and tradition of nearly a century and a half of excellence! Recently we celebrated our 2007 Hall of Fame Inductees. Our Hall of Fame reads as a collective Who’s Who of our nation. These individuals are some of the building blocks of all that is great in our nation and a testament to our graduates! Duty, honor, integrity and honesty are stamped indelibly on us by our alma mater and while form is temporary, class is permanent!
Virtus et Scientia
P.S. The fact that years later people are still responding to your nonsense should give you an indication in the regard CIC is held by both current students and alumni!

The school does have its pros and its cons. However, I cannot imagine a better all-male or co-ed school in Trinidad and Tobago. The facilities could have been better but the school has struggled with finances and they HAVE tried. As I entered the school, I was welcomed by fresh classrooms and GREAT teachers.
I did shit in my final exams for CXC but i would never put blame on the school. That was mine and Mary-Jane's fault. That school had brilliant and enthusiastic teachers with most gifted or trained with the ability to teach.
In both Academics and Extra-Curricular activities including sports, the Saints has dominated the island. My sons will go there..
Forza Saints!!!

If the school is so 'prestigious' that's not reflected in the manner of argument represented here by some of its alumni !

This man is a bitter, self-centred and pathetic biach, as well he's a liar...and as such deserves no respect from the warriors that are saint's boys. So if my collegues choose to deal with this jackass in a way that would seem malicious...understand this, we doh play dat.

Just a couple things: to all those commenting about how it's a Catholic school and such: 1) I hope you never live in a country where all the best schools are run by a religion to which you don't subscribe and 2) you do realize that the school receives taxpayer money, right? Not enough, sure, but still - taxpayer money from Catholics, Anglicans, Hindus, Muslims, atheists, everybody. So I'm not sure why the religious nature of the school makes it OK to make people cut grass if they don't love Jesus.
Though on the other hand, as a Catholic I was always pretty pissed that they made me take Religion instead of taking on a 9th subject like the non-catholics got to do. But that's another story.
Also, does anyone else love the irony in the fact that half the comments here are basically: "Hostility? WHAT HOSTILITY!?!? YOU BULLAH MAN WHA DE ASS!!!!" I think the "cease and desist" comment was my personal favourite.
Finally, I know Seldo personally (and I'm heterosexual, though as you know he hates all of us breeders), and he's got a great job and is getting a fantastic deal on his apartment to boot. So all of you who are worried that he's really "sad" or whatever: worry no more!

@ ed: Seldo's got a great job and is getting a fantastic deal on his apartment to boot? HAHAHA. You sure you not still in the closet? Some of the queerest commentary I've heard in a while. It's all good though, we all Saints fellas

I was the last of the old Prep. days.
My teachers and Holy Ghost Fathers were highly disciplined and taught us respect and diciplin,
which has paid off for me over the years.
Sorry for all the cry babies and forget all the successful people who came from this institution

Even two people in the same family could write contrasting family views. My experience with CIC College life, and its' associated activities---the Cadets, the First Trinidad Sea Scouts, the Camera Club, etc, between my years: 1972 to 1977 has left me with a lasting legacy of discipline, respect and an excellent command of the English Language.
Back in the seventies, you could not speak inproper English at school without being swiftly corrected. Positive peer pressure would quickly exert its head and you would be quickly correct by anyone within earshot.
Every institution is but a work in progress that evolves. Having gone thru' the experience, it is now up to all of us as good citizens, to become involved in the due process of Law and Politics, the College, etc, to effect positve change for the next generation. And this blog has been a great place to begin that process.

Sorry Seldo, Ah mean Selda,
We CIC boys ain't into any back door culture. Maybe you spould have asked your parents to send you to the convent opposite instead. I'm sure they would have accepted your there. From the way you sound, a little long hair and a skirt would have done the trick just nicely and you would have had all the clean toilets you wanted, and probably some male janitorial staff to service your particular needs.
