WOOHOO!
The Union at Warwick, my home for the past year has just been voted non-smoking in the recent referendum. You, dear reader, know better than anyone that one of my pet hates is coming home from a night out smelling bad, of smoke, and kissing smokers, ewww! So naturally this should be right up my street, but oh dear sweet god, are the students at Warwick complete imbeciles?! (oh how I longed to say this at points last year)
I know as well as the 6 others who made the budget for the Union, (and the 6 more on top of that who are legally responsible for it now) that this is not a move it can afford to make. Not even in the name of sustainability, let alone progress! There ain't no space in that budget. The Union is one lean, mean machine. We did a lot last year, including improving HEAT, involving international students more, finding extra money and support and training for societies, I did a lot of bouncing and dancing at Crash. In one quick click of a button from some selfish students in their rooms in Rootes this could potentially have been undone. We're supposed to be improving these things, not cutting them!
You see, Warwick Union has and always will suffer to competition in the locality. Now Coventry venues don't just have the drinks prices on Cholo. Welcome to the harsh reality of the commercial world my dears. The Union sometimes seems empty, so noone goes. Donward this will spiral from now on.
So yeah, selfish Warwick students. I'd endure washing my hair after Top B 100 times to give students just half of the opportunities and support I had thanks to the Union. Wave goodbye to the place we knew and loved.
